Mike Berthelsen currently serves as the VP for University Services and has had a broad career of more than 26 years of service to the University of Minnesota.  University Services is the campus operations organization that includes: Public Safety, Facilities Management, Capital Project Management, Space-Planning-Real Estate, University Health and Safety and Auxiliaries (Housing, Dining, Parking, Fleet, U-Market Services and Bookstores). In FY 2017, U Services had 2,222 FTE/3,544 total employees, an annual operating budget of $416 million and a current capital program of $1.4 billion.

For the 10 years prior to the VP role, Mike served as the Associate Vice President for Facilities Management (FM), where he lead an organization of 1,100 employees serving students, faculty and staff in more than 24 million square feet and was responsible for a $210 million budget.  Prior to FM, Mr. Berthelsen served as the CFO for University Services.  In that role he oversaw a budget of $300 million, created a new budget model and developed a Facilities Conditions Assessment database to help guide capital investment.  He came to the University of Minnesota after working as a Budget Analyst for the Minnesota State Legislature.  Mr. Berthelsen earned his Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs and a BA from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.
